The downside of permanent makeup

The downside of permanent makeup

For many women, the idea of having permanent makeup applied is tempting. One of the most common reasons cited, is how much of a time-saver it can be. No doubt, you will spend less time every morning getting ready. Permanent makeup is normally for lip liner, eyeliner, eyebrows, and lip color. You can even camouflage unsightly facial scars. In some cases, permanent makeup can be a great choice. However, there are definitely downsides to having this procedure done, and that's the focus of this article.

First of all, permanent makeup isn't really permanent. In other words, that vivid lip color isn't going to last a lifetime. It's likely to require a touchup every few years. While this can vary, eyebrows will normally need to be reapplied every four years. With lip color and eyeliner, it's about every eight years . Permanent makeup is a tattoo. With a facial tattoo, it tends to fade over time. Not completely, but enough to require a trip back to the permanent makeup artist.

Another downside, is the risk of the makeup artist doing a poor job. If your eyebrows come out shaped incorrectly, it can be your worst nightmare. This can't be stated enough. I've seen horror pictures of permanent makeup applications gone wrong, and can only imagine the grief they've caused. What if you pick a lip color that you no longer like a few weeks down the road? You're kind of stuck with it. At least, for several years until it begins to fade. Until then, you would need to apply a different shade of lipstick daily, which defeats the entire purpose of permanent makeup. If you do decide to have this done, research the makeup artist and don't be afraid to ask for references. You'll also want to take your time in considering what colors to select.

You may suffer from certain side effects as well. In certain cases, permanent makeup applications have caused allergies, excessive swelling, redness, infection, scarring and bumps in the skin. In The New England Journal of Medicine, it was reported that permanent makeup may cause "serious, long-term disfiguring reactions." This was based on the type of complaints the FDA has received over the past decade. To put it into perspective, there have been only 150 "serious" cases since 2003. Chances are, you won't be one of the unlucky ones. However, it's still something to consider.

This article is not necessarily to discourage you from having permanent makeup applied. In fact, there are many women that have been happy with this procedure. At the same time, it's important to understand the risks, and make an informed decision.
